How to Clean Your Area Rug
Area rugs can add a cozy, warm feeling to your home and provide a theme for your decor in the room. Over time they can absorb dirt, dust and even stains that seem impossible to get out. The following are some useful tips on how to clean your area rug safely without damaging it.
The first part when cleaning these is to know exactly what fabric your rug is made of. Rugs are no different than our clothes, we cannot use certain chemicals on our clothes and the same rule applies to your carpeting. For example, wool rugs should not be steam cleaned as that can cause severe damage to them. Silks and handmade rugs typically come with their own specific care instructions as well, so do take the time to read and follow those carefully.
For smaller rugs that are machine-friendly, you can simply toss them in your washing machine and hang dry. For larger ones you can choose to take them to the local dry cleaner. Cost for this will usually run you about a hundred dollars for an average 9 x12 size. If that’s not an option for you then try the old “hosing” method that housewives have been doing for decades. You simply hang the rug on a laundry clothes line outside and get something to fasten the rug to the line so it doesn’t fall off like clips that can withhold that kind of weight. Once it’s attached to the line securely, soak the rug with water from your garden hose. Make a combination of one part regular laundry detergent (no bleach) and two parts water into a spray bottle and begin to spray it onto the carpet evenly. You can let the soap sit on the rug for a few minutes if it has a good amount of dirt on it and then spray the soap off with the hose. Be sure to get all the soap off the rug to ensure no soap spots are on it when it dries. To be certain it’s free of soap, continue spraying the hose at a downward position until the water running off the rug is clear. Some people even take their rugs to the car wash and perform this exact exercise to prevent their lawns from being saturated in water and also for the high powered hoses available there.
